Dalton S1 students conducted a symposium as a capstone to their work this semester extending literature beyond the ELA classroom and into real-world advocacy. Students and teachers gathered to raise awareness and share their research findings with the larger school community. The audience included senior 1 peers, older students who came out to lend their support to first year students, as well as Dalton teaching faculty.

The symposium program was as follows:

  1. Anna Song, Leo Zhou, Helena He (Song based on “Same Love”)

The symposium began with music—the first group shared their student-created music video. This group created their own lyrics to the hit song “Same Love,” capitalizing on themes of acceptance and identity. They incorporated allusions to ELA novels as well as advocacy themes from the recent semester.

  2. Shining Gu, Yaxin Tang, Irina Liu (Speech on Parent-Child Communication)

The second activity was a speech on parent-child communication and how to improve these familial relationships. This group focused on concrete steps students can take to take ownership of their familial relationships and improve them.

  3. Peng Yalin, Rowena Du, Ally Zeng (Activity on Parent-Child Relationships)

Following the previous speech, these students facilitated an activity on family relationships, encouraging the audience to engage by writing or drawing memories of key moments in their own relationships with their parents. They collected the responses for later display around Dalton Academy.

  4. Otto Xu, Aaron Liu, Jon Li (Speech on HIV in LGBTQ Awareness)

This group gave a well-researched speech on HIV/AIDS, its reality and stigma in modern culture. They also focused on the importance of safe sexual health practices. They emphasized the importance of acceptance and not letting inaccurate stigmas impact our interpersonal relationships.

  5. Zhang Xinwen, Yang Letao (Research Presentation on Teenaged Anxiety in Dalton Academy)

The final speakers were a pair of students sharing their independent research on teenaged anxiety in Dalton Academy. As we are in the midst of exam season, their presentation was greeted by good-humored attention by the student audience. The students had researched both the prevalence of anxiety at Dalton as well as medically supported solutions to anxiety, which they shared with the audience. They concluded by sharing further resources, to further assist any students struggling with anxiety.

The symposium concluded with Master of Ceremonies Otto Xu thanking the group for their attendance and participation.

Same Love”)
